THE ARTISTS

The Vocal Ensembles:

  • NEVESTA'S VOICE
nevestas voice bwThroughout human history the folk songs have been an ongoing source of storytelling and entertainment. And though these people have passed away, they have all left us stories and a unique opportunity to look into their lives, joys, tragedies, loves and humour across time and distances. The Bulgarian song tradition has with its depth, power and heart aching beauty brought the members of Nevesta’s Voice together, and now on an ongoing journey towards the Arabic, Persian, East European and Nordic sound universes. Nevesta’s voice honestly passes on folk songs in their own minimalistic and soulful arrangements, just as they’ve always been sung – only the stories and the voices.

  • KERANTZIDES [ERKET's Polyphonic Ensemble]
2017.03.21 KerantzidesThe polyphonic ensemble "Kerantzides" has begun its polyphonic research since 2007. It focuses on the study and singing performance of folk pluralism that develops in the provinces of Dropoleos and Pogoni (Epirus & Northern Epirus). The ensemble is composed from people who do not have a locality with these areas. As a singing group, however, its members try to approach this particular type of popular pluralism through their continuous and exclusive engagement with it, as well as by studying the historical-social and cultural structures of the indigenous communities that practice it. The purpose of the ensemble is not so much the performative reproduction and cultural use of the specific polyphonic song. The focus is rather its cultural understanding as a way of human communication and expression, a way that can be extremely important for interpersonal relationships also in urban spaces.

The Film Directors:

  • PAVLOS KAVVADIAS
kavadias pavlos bwPavlos Kavadias has a Greek/Canadian nationality. He is a film maker, photographer and puppeteer. He have been a photographer, puppeteer and film maker for about 8 years now. He has made 3 documentary films inspired by Kosmos project, under the artistic direction of Stamatis Efstathiou. Last year while being in India he decided to start recording his daily impressions on video and making small films and together with photos and text documenting his journey with a personal touch and sharing it through Internet with other people. That included an Indian family with which he stayed for about 2 months.
Last year when he came back to Athens, he introduced a workshop recording the inhabitants of dubious neighborhoods with mobiles making sure that the team would approach them as friends and not as cold reporters, sitting and eating with them even offering them to use out cameras and ask them questions if they wanted to. This idea of using the camera to communicate and not just as a cold objective recording tool has become very central in his film making exploration.

Now he has started working on the production of the short film "CLOUD", which has been funded by the Greek Cinema Center. • ELISABETH KLEIN
    [https://www.facebook.com/NEVESTAsVOICE/ || www.musicspokenhere.dk]
Elisabeth KleinElisabeth has been on a journey in music since she was born. Her first instrument was the voice, what we might have in common. She started playing the piano in the age of 6. From 2005-2010 she studied classical piano in Münster, Germany. Another inner voice got stronger and made her move to Aarhus, Denmark, for studying "Global music". During these years her concept of "music" broadened vastly. Through working with the Ghanean group "African Footprint" (2011) she realised that stories, songs, rhythms and movements used to be one unit, called "music", connecting people's hearts&minds. And during "Journey of Fools"with Stamatis & Atropos Theatre (2011-2012) an old sense of musical intuition found its place in Elisabeth's ears again. Today she works as a piano teacher, choir leader, composer, singer, accordionist, pianist and performer. You can meet her on stage with Music Spoken Here, Nevesta's Voice, Sedjanka Århus, Sjöström Duo and in various groups of performing art. Besides that she really enjoys leading musical and vocal processes in groups. Inside she is still listening to the calls of music, realizing slowly that this journey might never end.

THE WORKSHOPS

ELISABETH KLEIN & NEVESTA’S VOICE: "PERSONAL STORIES & FOLK SINGING"
The workshop will focus on finding your own unique voice and way of telling the stories within folksongs – both individually and as a group. Compared to other genres as fx classical singing, the folk tradition doesn’t have one sound ideal but is a result of geography, culture and historic influences. We will discover the natural potential of your voices through group improvisations and a short introduction to different folklore singing styles as the Bulgarian and the Nordic. We might end with creating some simple spontaneous song-arrangements according to each tradition.

PARASKEVI G. KANELLATOU: "THE TRADITIONAL POLYPHONY IN THE VILLAGE OF KTISMATA (POGONI REGION, EPIRUS, WEST GREECE)"
The workshop will present how folk polyphony of Pogonian village Ktismata is being developed in the frame of community. The workshop will be structured on three levels: a) theoretical (ethnomusicological structure, community function), b) practical (with the help of the polyphonic ensemble "The Kerantzides" there will be a voice collaboration of the members of the ensemble with the participants of three polyphonic songs) , c) operational (open dialogue on the cross-functional functioning of this folk polyphony as a way of cultural expression and cultural projection at interpersonal and community level).

STAMATIS EFSTATHIOU: "THE VOICE AS THE GATE OF THE SOUL"
Through specific exercises applied by Stamatis Efstathiou in his theatrical system of training, the "Theater of Connection", we will work during 2 hours and 45’ aiming to connect the voice with: a) individual physical impulses; b) the body's energy centers and c) the space and the partner. Before human starts singing, it is important to unlock the raw material of his personal vocal material and to incorporate it into a meeting, reaction, and play with the partner, the team, the community, and whatever life or humankind surrounds him. A great exploration for every human, artist, or not. A work that aims to release and highlight the poetry, the game and the sacredness of each person's vocal richness.

[Important note! Participants should wear comfortable clothes (not dresses, skirts, jeans, etc.) since work for much of it involves movement on the ground and in the space. Also, they should not wear jewelry, watches, earrings, etc. during the work].
